You may have heard that many people choose to only use soap that has been made from goats milk. What is the reason for this? Goats milk soaps are believed to be highly beneficial for people with sensitive skin, that is, they suffer from skin irritations such as eczema or psoriasis.
Goats milk contains alpha hydroxy acids, vitamins and minerals. Alpha hydroxy acids such as lactic acid remove dead skin cells leaving new cells on the skin's surface that are smoother and younger looking. These acids also help to break down the bonds which hold dead skin cells together which in turn allows the dead cells to be sloughed off the skin's surface. Removing dead skin cells will help many skin conditions simply by removing the irritation.
Vitamin A is necessary to repair damaged skin tissue and to maintain healthy skin. It is also thought that Vitamin A helps to reduce lines and wrinkles, control acne and provide some relief from psoriasis. Goats milk is particularly high in Vitamin A.
The cream in goats milk helps boost the moisturizing quality of handmade soap. This is an important quality, particularly in the winter months when many of us suffer from dry skin. Keeping the skin moisturized helps to keep it healthy.
Another important element of goats milk is selenium. It is believed this mineral has a role to play in preventing skin cancer, and it may also prevent damage to the skin from excessive exposure to the sun's harmful rays.
Oatmeal in soap provides gentle exfoliation for the skin. With its many lipids (fatty acids), proteins and protective chemical compounds known as saponins, oatmeal has long been used as a soothing treatment for numerous itchy skin conditions ranging from dry skin and bug bites to eczema and psoriasis.
So in combination, goats milk and oatmeal are two wonderfully natural ingredients that deal with sensitive skin issues, and provide moisturizing compounds for a healthy, younger looking skin.
One of our favourite PKM Creations soaps is the very popular Goat's Oats & Honey. With the goodness of goats milk and oatmeal, this soap provides the added benefit of honey which acts as a humectant. This means it helps the skin to retain moisture by drawing moisture from the air to the skin, much the same way glycerin does.
This soap produces an abundant, rich, creamy lather and has a delightfully sweet, toasty aroma. It is one you'll always want to come back to.
